Yes on California Dream Act (SB 1301)
February 29, 2007
Dear Community Leaders, Students and Supporters:
On behalf of PowerPAC and the office of Senator Gil Cedillo, we
are making a call to action and unity for the passage of the
California Dream Act (SB 1301). We are building a grassroots
coalition and would like to invite you to our Power and Unity
Breakfast on Friday, March 7, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
at Barragan's Restaurant, 1538 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles.
SB 1301 will give undocumented college students, (less
than 1% of CA university students), a much needed boost to
finish college. Currently undocumented students contribute to
but are not eligible for university financial aid. This year is pivotal
for the California Dream Act. The State's budget crisis must not be
used to block the Dream Act.
Under SB 1301 there is no economic impact on the state
budget. But, universities can invest a little now for greater
economic gain in the future. Though the Dream Act was vetoed
last year by the Governor, Senator Cedillo has been
successful in building greater bipartisan support for it this
year. In addition, we are building a much larger coalition that will
ensure the Governor hears our voices when it reaches his desk.
We are asking everyone to get involved in supporting SB 1301.
No on California AB 1758
A second issue we need to address is AB 1758. Currently State
Assembly member Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine) has introduced a bill,
AB 1758, that would repeal AB 540. As a result, this bill would deny
undocumented youth from access to higher education. This is a
prime example of the ongoing effort to devalue the contribution of
immigrants in this state. Through our combined efforts we can stop
AB 1758.
As progressive leaders of our communities, we are asking you to
join us in making sure education is a right for all and support
access to higher education for our youth:
Protect AB 540
Pass the California Dream Act, SB 1301
The agenda for the breakfast will include:
* Information on SB 1301, AB 540, and AB 1758
*Address question and concerns regarding the legislations
* Discussion and coalition building
* Strategy and plan of action
For any questions and to RSVP contact Ana I. Grande at
ana@powerpac.org or (323) 363-7486.
Sincerely,
Ana I. Grande
