Guzman Sworn in as First Latina on Texas Supreme Court
Texas has a new Supreme Court justice -- the first Latina to serve on the
state's highest court.

Eva Guzman was sworn in at a ceremony at the State Capitol Monday
afternoon. She was appointed by Governor Rick Perry in October to replace
Justice Scott Brister. Before her appointment, Justice Guzman was named
"Latina Judge of the Year" for 2009 by the Hispanic National Bar Association.

Member of the Month
About 15 years ago, and while still in her early 20s, Carmen Rad took the
first step on the road to entrepreneurial success. Using her background in
fashion design and marketing to produce custom clothing, embroidery work
and promotional items, she launched CR&A Custom, Inc. out of her home
with just two employees. With no outside funding, and no equity to secure a
loan, she turned over income received to make more purchases and meet
payroll.

Today, Carmen runs a multi-million dollar company and has been
recognized by the SBA, NAWBO and other prominent organizations. We are
proud to recognize Carmen for her many accomplishments and proudly call
her an NLBWA member.

Females Have More Jobs Than Ever--
So Why Are They So Unhappy?
Soon--for the first time in history--women will outnumber men in the
percentage of jobs held in the U.S. As of October 2009 women made up
49.9% of America's workforce, according to a recent cover story in The
Economist. And in its special report on the subject, Time made the dubious
claim that "women have become dominant in our society." Yet despite the
economic and social gains they've made, several recent studies found that
American women report being less happy now than in previous generations.
What gives?

Networking Survival Tips for Women
What They Don't Teach in Business School: The Basics of Working a Room
and Building Your Network

You're standing in the doorway, coat checked and a glass of wine in hand,
facing a room full of unfamiliar faces. You feel a bit awkward and slightly
panicked about whom to approach first and what to say. Your mind whirls:
Am I dressed appropriately? Did I bring enough business cards? What if I
say the wrong thing?

Career consultant Simma Lieberman recalls the time just after she started
her business and paid $35 to attend a networking dinner. She went by
herself, dressed in her power suit, ready to mingle and make connections.
When she walked into the hotel and saw the other attendees talking and
having a good time, her courage evaporated. Mortified by her quick
surrender, she soon made it a priority to excel at networking. Here's how:
