The housing slump took a toll last year on the Inland region's population
boom, but several cities still were among the fastest growing in California,
state officials reported Thursday.
Beaumont's 11.3 percent population increase to 31,477 residents made it the
second fastest-growing city based on percentage change, the state
Department of Finance reported. San Joaquin ranked No. 1, with a 17.4
percent increase to 4,521 residents.
The state's annual population report measured growth from Jan. 1, 2007, to
Jan. 1, 2008. California added 490,000 residents during that time, boosting
the population to more than 38 million.
Since the April 2000 census, Beaumont's population has grown 177 percent,
said Dan Sheya, Department of Finance population research specialist.
For Carrie Jacobs, one of the 3,206 residents who moved to Beaumont last
year, such growth hasn't altered her perception of the city. "It's still a small
town, so far," said Jacobs, a homemaker with two sons, ages 5 and 11
months.
Among cities with fewer than 300,000 residents, Fontana ranked as the
second fastest-growing city based on numeric change. Fontana added
7,216 residents, pushing its population to 188,498.
In recent years, much of Fontana's growth has been through annexations.
Since its program of acquiring neighboring land was established in 2000,
Fontana has added nearly 5 square miles, with a combined population of
more than 14,000 residents, said Cecilia Lopez-Henderson, annexation
program coordinator.
Other area cities on the top 25 fastest-growing list, based on percentage
change, were Indio, Coachella, Victorville, Desert Hot Springs, Lake Elsinore
and La Quinta.
The 10 fastest-growing cities saw their average growth rates decline to 8.5
percent last year from 13 percent the previous year, Sheya said.
Riverside, Victorville, Indio and Moreno Valley were on the top 10 list of
fastest-growing cities with populations of less than 300,000, based on
numeric change, state officials said.
Census figures released last month showed that the Riverside-San
Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area added 86,660 residents last year,
down from about 114,000 the previous year and more than 137,000 in 2004.
Los Angeles added 49,803 residents, a 1.2 percent increase that boosted its
population to 4,045,873. It is more than three times the size of San Diego, the
state's second-largest city, with 1,336,865 residents.
